Oybin

Oybin - The vast ruins of a medieval castle and monastery stand on a steep rock promontory. Originally a guard castle on the old trade route was behind Charles IV. and in 1364 there was a celestial monastery.
The romantic ruin of Oybin Castle, standing on top of sandstone table mountains, is one of the largest tourist attractions of the Zittau mountain range. The castle was built in places where an important trade route from Bohemia to Lusatia was going through ancient times.
Oybin was settled in the Bronze and Iron Age, but still preserved buildings and their remains in the castle area date back to the 13th century. After various political disputes, the castle fell again to the Czech Crown and its owner became Charles's son Jan. During his reign he extended the existing fortifications of the castle, newly rebuilt the Imperial House (1364) and the Gothic monastery church (1366-1384), which carries the characteristic features of the Prague Temple Building School Petr Parléř.
In 1574, it won a castle with a monastery and the neighboring land of Žitava. However, in 1577 the decisive factor for their destiny was the intervention of lightning and the next fire, during which the whole complex had burst into the foundations. There was no rebuilding, and the collapse of one of the rocks contributed in the year 1681. Further damages arose from stone extraction at the bottom of the castle.
It was not until the Romantic era that the overgrown debris of Oybin was revealed. The entire castle dominates the torso of the monastery cathedral with typical slim windows in the perimeter walls. The church, built during the reign of Charles IV. even for centuries, it keeps its fascinating atmosphere. In the summer season, classical music concerts are often held here. The vaulted corridor with view windows, in which the cross-way was placed, leads into the castle cemetery with Renaissance tombstones, which are still used today. In the northernmost part of the ruins is a stylish refreshment restaurant.

Tolštejn is the best preserved castle ruins in the Lusatian Mountains. It is about 2 km south of Jiřetín pod Jedlovou on a distinctive rock-climbing rock (670 m), which is a characteristic landmark. The name of the castle (Tollenstein) was derived from the original name of the Dohlenstein rock (= Kavčí kámen).
The castle was built in the second half of the 13th century to protect the Prague Route - an important trade route connecting the inland of Bohemia and Lusatia. The first historical mention of the castle dates back to 1337, when Tolštejn conquered the army, because the local crew engaged in robberies on Žitavsko. The castle was acquired from the beginning of the 15th century by Hynek Berka of Dubé, one of the richest lords in Bohemia. Tolštejn then served as a forward castle castle, giving warning during the several Hussite campaign in Lusatia and Silesia. In 1528 the estate of Jiří z Šlejnic took over, which supported the extraction of silver and other metals in the vicinity, and in 1554 the town of Jiřetín pod Jedlovou founded the Saxon miners. In the following year, therefore, the castle was visited by Emperor Josef II during his inspection visit to North Bohemia.
The ruins were then searched by the locals who took the building stone and the treasure hunters who dug in the cellars and cut the walls to contribute to its destruction. A hermit hut was built next to the ruins around the middle of the 19th century. With the development of tourism in the 19th century, Tolštejn became the favorite destination of many visitors, and in the following year he built with the permission of Prince Jan of Lichtenstein on a neighboring slope a wooden Swiss-style inn. Tolštejn has many stories about white ladies, robbers and great treasures hidden in the ruins. The rumors also tell about the Wallachians who were looking for precious stones around, or about the secret corridor that allegedly led from the castle to the cave in the Meissen Mine. The legend of sword dancing, which was later assigned to conquer Tolštejn in 1337, can be found on the legend page.
From the top rocks accessible by the iron staircase with the railing, there is a nice view of the surrounding peaks of the Lusatian Mountains and the valleys of Jiřetín, Horní and Dolní Podluží and Varnsdorf, behind which there are the hills of Šluknovské hills and Luzice.
